Here are two color educational films released by British Gas and the Shell Oil corporation. The first “Convection” was part of a British Gas educational film series called “Convection, Conduction, Radiation.” This episode presents the story of convection and convection currents. Convection is the movement caused within a fluid by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the influence of gravity, which consequently results in transfer of heat. Copyright is circa the 1960s. The second film, from the “World of Oil” series, describes how crude oil is found in the Earth. It dates to 1976.

Title: Convection Conduction Radiation (:07-:15), produced by Stewart Films and directed by Clive Mitchell. Convection is explained and shown with a ball. Convection is the movement caused within a fluid by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the influence of gravity, which consequently results in transfer of heat. Convection is shown with water. Convection currents are shown with a hot water system. A diagram explains how this works (:16-1:51). A model shows how a convection current works with smoke. A man sits near a fire in a home. Convection not working is shown. A modern heater system shows convection working properly. Convection helps in hot air balloons. Hot air balloons are being set up (1:52-3:46). Hot air balloons go up into the air. A glider in the sky. Gliders rely on natural occurring convection. How the sun warms certain parts quicker than others is shown and explained, this ties into thermal convection for a glider (3:47-5:19). Water vapor rises. A cumulus cloud. Rainstorm in England. Sea breezes are explained and shown. A diagram shows convection currents (5:20-6:34). Convection summary showing liquids, hot water, gliders (6:35-7:17). End credits (7:18-7:29).

A fault is shown and explained (7:40-9:31). Oil wells in 1859. Layers of rock. Aerial photography is used to identify areas for petroleum prospecting. Two technicians move aerial photographic equipment around to better plot their search for oil. Maps are created to be surveyed. Rock formations. Rock pieces are picked at. Gravity, Magnetic Field, Seismography are discussed. A machine is placed on the ground. A map is studied (9:32-11:54). A magnetometer is used. Seismography is done in a smaller land area on a land surface. Trucks drive nearby. At sea, an air gun machine is lowered into the water. Radar or sonar picks up up waves and fed to a recording device. A ship at sea. Animation shows how sonar is used. Computers are used and the pictures studied by scientists. Men sit at a table and discuss, maps of the South China Sea near Borneo are examined (11:55-14:19). End credits (14:20-14:27).
